The ship in this metal model kit is “Taiping” – made famous in John Woo’s 2015 film, “The Crossing”. Taping was built as a passenger and cargo ship in the United States, and launched in 1920. She saw service for the US military as a general transport ship in WWII before being converted for passenger use by a Shanghai shipping firm in 1948. She was carrying over 1,000 refugess from Shanghai to Taiwan when she collided with a smaller ship, sinking with the loss of over 1,500 lives.
