The Douglas SBD Dauntless was introduced in 1940, and although production stopped in 1944, it continued in service until 1959 with the Mexican Air Force. Designed as a dual-role diver bomber and scout plane, it was the United States Navy’s main carrier-based scout/dive bomber from mid-1940 until mid-1944. It is best remembered for its contribution to the Battle of Midway in June 1942, where Dauntless planes sank all four Japanese carriers.
