The P-51 Mustang was one of the most famous fighter aircraft of the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. Among the single-engine fighters used by the U.S. Army and Navy, it had the longest range, making it the most important escort for strategic bombers in both the European and Pacific theaters. It continued to see service until the Korean War.
